Choosing assistive technology: common questions answered
By AT & Rehab editorial
New to assistive technology? These plain answers cover where to begin, how to pay for a device, and how to avoid buying the wrong thing.
Where do I start?
Start with the difficulty, not the device. Write down the everyday tasks that are hard — reading, talking, moving around, hearing — and how much help they need. A free needs assessment turns this into a short, useful summary you can take to a professional or an ADIP camp.
How do I know a product is genuine?
Look for verified vendors and clear source information. Every product in this directory lists its manufacturer, country of origin, price guidance and where to buy, and is checked before it is published.
Can I get help paying for a device?
Often, yes. The ADIP scheme can cover the full or part cost for eligible people, and a UDID card makes applying easier. Some devices are also supported under the National Trust's schemes.
Should I buy the most expensive option?
No. The right device is the one that fits the person and the task — not the costliest. Many families start with a free or low-cost option, see how it works in daily life, and only move to a higher-tech device if they need to.
What if I need advice?
Speak to a rehabilitation professional, therapist or special educator. You can also ask other families and experts in the community section of this portal.
